It is part of a series of four symbolic female representations, called Flowers , which includes Flowers of the Mountain, Flowers of the Fields, Flowers of Water and Flowers of Greenhouse . Signed lower right in the stone. According to watercolors exhibited at the Salon des Artistes from 1893 to 1941.
Elisabeth Sonrel, born in 1874 in Tours, studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of the painter Jules Lefebvre. An artist with Symbolist affinities, she draws her inspiration from Renaissance painting, notably in the style of Botticelli for this series as well as for the series Seasons . Realized in a typically Art Nouveau style, the Flowers are part of a trend inherited from the pre-Raphaelites of the second half of the 19th century, who like to represent the woman against a backdrop of luxuriant vegetation. The curved lines that frame the representation blend in with the abundant floral decoration, and the silhouette, an allegory dressed in the antique style, is detached from a rural landscape surrounded by daisies, blueberries, gold buttons and yarrow. This type of lithographic series ( Flowers, Seasons) played a decisive role in the spread of Art Nouveau, and the graphic arts of that contemporary were declined in posters, almanacs and newspapers.
