Woodcut wire signed in the plate by the artist and engraver. Composition made by Gustave Doré and engraved by Pisan Heliodorus on strong wove the request of the publisher Hetzel to illustrate in Folio edition of Contes de Perrault in 1862. Some foxing in margins achieved without drawing. These illustrations Tales are considered the most successful of this text: Gustave Doré offers a dramatic vision unprecedented. For him, everything contributes to the dramatization of the story, since the theatrical staging table to the smallest details that create a terrifying realism thanks to the so-called "wood color" technique. It uses ink or gouache, previously diluted as is the technique of "wash". For tales of Perrault, the eleven best engravers of the time were enlisted to burn chisel forty planks: Pannemaker Pisan, Pierdon, Maurand, Boetzel, Brevière Hébert, Deschamps, Dumont, and Delduc Fagnon . The work of Gustave Doré under illustration Tales is paramount; it does not reduce its ornamental engraving function but becomes a real object of narration. These illustrations are the most famous works and Doré received rave reviews immediately, especially that of Sainte-Beuve in The New Monday (23 December 1861): "A Perrault as there ever was, and as far no one will see.
