Century, subtitled "political newspaper, literary and social economy", is a French newspaper which first appeared on July 1, 1836 and whose publication stopped in 1932.
Founded by Armand Dutacq, it is under the July Monarchy dynastic left opposite Guizot. It was directed by Guillemot Hercules and Chambolle for the political party; Louis Desnoyers assured the literary journal, which collaborated with many writers including Charles Nodier, Leon Gozlan, Alphonse Karr, Jules Sandeau. Honore de Balzac gave his first edition of Beatrix in August 1839.
First competition from The Press Émile de Girardin created the same day, The Age gained a wide audience very quickly (30 000 subscribers in 1839) and prospered until 1848. Although distributed throughout the country with a public bourgeois and liberal, its circulation increased to make it the most influential French newspapers of the time (35 000 copies in 1870).
From October 1870 to March 1871, it is published in Poitiers and Bordeaux. Suppressed by the Commune, he reappeared in Paris on 15 May 1871.
