The most complete old edition, and the last one, partly original, before that made in 1857 by Antoine de Latour (by more exhaustive). "These two volumes, which follow the collection of French poets published by Coustelier, are hard to find". Brunet, IV, 1071.
Binding in full oyster calf iced time. Back with ornate nerves. title label in red morocco, piece of black veal tomaison. A lack at the head of volume I. Along the third chamber of volume I, joints open. Traces of friction. The table was placed at the end of the first volume. Charming copy.
Racan's poetry is a continuation of that of Desportes and Ronsard. Malherbe, his master whom he met at the age of sixteen, reproached him for his nonchalance and his too great licenses, but considered him his most talented pupil; indeed his writing is more fluid, but also more rustic. after Malherbe's death, Racan left the pen for 20 years. Although eager as his ancestors to shine in a military career, his natural dreamy and distracted won him many setbacks and he eventually withdraw. He produced in 1619, at the age of 30, the poem that would make him famous: Les Bergeries, which is his most important work; and at 24, proposed by Richelieu, he will be occupied a seat at the French Academy.
