Jean-François Paul de Gondi, Cardinal de RETZ Memoires du Cardinal de Retz

Jean-François Paul de Gondi, Cardinal de RETZ

Memoires du Cardinal de Retz

S.n., Amsterdam 1718, In-16 (8,5x14,7cm), (14) 428pp. et (2) 407pp. et (2) 420pp., 3 volumes reliés.

Second edition. A rare counterfeit of the first edition of a rare rarity that appeared in Nancy in 1717. This edition will also be given in Cologne at David Roger, who seems to be a fictional publisher. Title pages in red and black.
Bindings in full brown contemporary brown. Back to Jansenist nerves. Title and tomato pieces in red morocco. The backs are darker. Friction. A tiny hole of worms at the tail of volume I, as well as on the upper bit at the top. Good copy.
Paul de Gondi wrote his memoirs at the request of his friends, at the time of his exile, about the age of sixty (about 1675 - 1677), and composed the autobiography of a politician in a contemporary of civil war. Sling. Not content to be a historical testimony of the foremost, the work is among the literary monuments of the eighteenth and memoirs and other autobiographies; by his precise alert style, that of a man of action and intrigues of remarkable intelligence and political ambition always on the alert (always ready to ally himself with those who had betrayed him the day before). His memoirs will constitute a revenge and his last spring of ambition.
Ex libris handwritten at the bottom of the title page: A. Germain, parish priest of Reilhac.
