Chez Etienne Michallet, à Paris 1688, in 12 (9,5x16,5cm), (58) 308pp., relié.

Second edition of mention. This edition follows the first few months, it is similar in all respects except for some corrections. It is at the Rue Saint Jacques, "the Image Saint Paul." "The second edition also Print. in 1688 only offers a few slight changes, and the third, under the same date, is simply a reprint of the second. "(Brunet III, 720). See Tchermerzine VIII.
Bound in full calf marbled period. Back with nerves decorated. A small lack in foot.
The writing of characters begins in 1670, but it was only after seventeen years working as La Bruyère decided to publish them; yet it is so little sure of success that gives preeminence to his translation of Theophrastus characters in the first editions and it will be the fifth that assert the Characters to Theophrastus, La Bruyere and finally sign the edition of his name.
