Shunga. 7 peintures sur soie

TOMIOKA EISEN & MIYAGAWA SHUNTEI

Shunga. 7 peintures sur soie

1880 - 1900, 25,8x31,7cm, autre.

Set of 7 original paintings on silk, 4 attributed to Tomioka Eisen and 3 to Migawata Shuntei. Eisen's paintings mounted on original paper board, Shuntei's on loose raw silk.
Modern folding binding in fabric, cardboard, paper and leather. The leaflet is bound in a light-green cloth folder. Each plate unfolds with a soft leather strip. The paintings already laminated on one board have themselves been laminated again on another board, while those on silk are held in place by 2 strips of paper in the margins. Each painting has an opening frame made from a different modern Japanese paper. The back covers, the slipcase, the inside of the folder as well as the outside have been treated with different precious Japanese papers. Light damp stains and soiling on the spine. Minor foxing on some paintings.
A magnificent set.
Late shunga works are distinguished by a particular brilliance, unequaled refinement and preciousness. Although they continue to respect the traditional framework and codes of shunga, these paintings highlight the interplay of fabrics, poses and faces, the pictorial achievement seeming to prevail over the theme illustrated - particularly in Shuntei's works in which bodies seem to float in space, while Eisen's are all elaborately decorated. In addition to these changes in pictorial treatment, there has been a shift in the role attributed to women, more participatory, even primary and inciting.
