Charles DICKENS The posthumous papers of the Pickwick club

Charles DICKENS

The posthumous papers of the Pickwick club

Chapman and Hall, London 1842, Fort in-8 (15x23cm), xiv (2) 609pp., relié.

New edition after the original of 1837 and illustrated with 43 boards with a frontispiece and title-frontispiece dated 1837.
Posterior binding ca 1880 in half brown shagreen. False nerves decorated with caissons and cold nets. Golden title. Burnings on the back of the false title, otherwise very clean set with rare bites. It is rare to encounter freckles without freckles because of the paper used, which is often heavily burnished or scorched.
The posthumous papers, as for all Dickens' works, first appeared in delivery from April 1836 to November 1837, and then in volume. Written by a 24-year-old Dickens, the work propelled the writer into a glory of which he never descended. The reception of the work was immense and very popular, it was claimed at the time that only the Bible and the works of Shakespeare exceeded in circulation The posthumous papers.
