L'Étoile du Sud is an adventure novel by Paschal Grousset, sold to the publisher Hetzel, then reworked and signed by Jules Verne. The action takes place at Griqualand in South Africa where the mining engineer Cyprien Méré is conducting organic chemistry studies on diamond deposits. This one manages to create a synthetic diamond, the black star, that many will seek to appropriate.
