Le Rouge et le Noir

A. Levavasseur, Paris 1831, 13,1x20,8cm, 2 volumes reliés.

[The Red and the Black]

First edition, "very rare and highly sought after" (Clouzot), one of 750 copies on laid paper, with title page vignettes drawn by Henry Monnier and engraved by Henri Porret.
Skillful restoration of a tear at the bottom of one page, slightly affecting one letter. Copy without foxing, which is rare.
Bound in half bottle-green calf, recolored spines with rich gilded arabesque patterns, black title and volume labels; marbled boards, endpapers, and flyleaves, speckled edges, later bindings in the Romantic style.
Le Rouge et le Noir, begun under the Restoration, was not completed until four months after the July Revolution of 1830 and was only published in the final weeks of that year. Critics of the time unanimously praised the novel's exceptional qualities, though even its most ardent admirers were shocked by the harsh critique of society and the Jacobinism of Julien Sorel.

A superb example of the first edition of French literature's great classic.
