L'homme qui rit

Librairie internationale Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Cie, ParisBruxelles 1869, In-8 (15,5x23,5cm), 381pp. et 301pp. et 291pp. et 384pp., 4 tomes en 3 volumes reliés.

first edition, without mention of edition. Presence of all false titles. Covers kept with a mention of fourth edition. Editorial strategy of the publisher, which has put copies of the first show up for sale with relay coverage that suggests a new edition.
Contemporary bindings in half black morocco. Ribbed back decorated with nets. Titles and golden numbers. Scattered freckles, unevenly distributed.
Pleasant copy established in a good time binding.
Certainly Hugo's masterpiece in the romantic, baroque and somber domain, where the poetic style evolving by antitheses and oxymorons is pushed to its extreme limits, and in which the Surrealists will recognize themselves.
