Victor HUGO

L'homme qui rit

Librairie internationale Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Cie, ParisBruxelles 1869, In-8 (16x25,5cm), 381pp. et 301pp. et 291pp. et 384pp., 4 tomes en 2 volumes reliés.

First edition, without mention of edition. Presence of all the fake titles.
Binders of the time in half black sheepskin. Back with nerves adorned with 3 florets. Golden titles. Scattered foxing, unevenly distributed, more present in the first 2 volumes. Pages uniformly tinted. Traces of pale wetting on some leaves in the first 2 volumes.
Pleasant copy, without mention of edition, established in a good binding time. Copy untrimmed, large margins appreciable.
Certainly the masterpiece of Hugo in the field of romance, baroque and dark, where the poetic style evolving by antitheses and oxymorons is pushed to its extreme limits, and in which will be recognized the Surrealists.
