First edition

Victor HUGO Les misérables

Victor HUGO

Les misérables

A. Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Cie, Bruxelles 1862, Fort in-8 (14,5x23cm), 10 tomes en 5 volumes reliés.

True first edition published a few days before that of Paris, without mention of edition, which is rare. It differs somewhat from the Parisian edition, especially with its black title pages, and its tables in 5 parts, detailing two volumes, which can guide the binder as here to connect the whole in 5 books and not in ten.
Binders in half morocco chocolate vintage. Back with 4 nerves adorned with wheels in tail and head, double fillet gilded on the nerves, and nets cold between the nerves. Slight traces of friction. A scratch at the last box of volume 3-4. Rubbed boards. Scattered burnings, especially at the beginning of each volume, then rarer on the whole. A border partly stripped on the upper plate of the last volume. A signature on some subtitles.
Beautiful copy in half morocco contemporary.
It was once asserted that the Paris edition had been censored and that it differed from the Belgian edition; we know today that this is not the case, and that it was Hugo who himself disseminated these noises that could only believe in Paris, certain passages would not be removed.
