Original French edition translated by F. d'Albert-Durade. Introductory note by the author in English and French agreeing to the translation. The first English edition appeared in London in 1859.
Binding in half sheepskin vintage wine. Smooth back decorated with series of nets. Golden title and number. Back evenly lightened. Some foxinges at the start of work if not very fresh.
First work by George Eliot which was immediately recognized as important despite a small circulation, and which received the approval of Dickens.
