First edition for 'Musée Dantan', 100 portraits drawn and engraved by Maurisset after the curious sculptures by Jean-Pierre Dantan (known as Dantan Jeune). 100 captions opposite each engraving by Louis Huart. Nice edition on vellum.
Bound with: 'Le vieux chasseur by Théophile Deyeux', “One of the rare illustrated volumes of the Romantic period on hunting” (Thébaud), with 53 lithographs by Eugène Rosset, including a title-frontispiece and 52 shooting and hunting scenes.
Green 3/4 morocco binding, signed (top of first flyleaf) Ottmann. Smooth spine elaborately decorated with long, bold and thin intricate designs in gilt, top edge gilt. Rubbing to spines and corners. Some foxing. A fine copy.
From the renowned library of Henri Béraldi, with his red morocco gilt stamped ex-libris.
Among the caricatures are featured the portraits of Balzac, Strauss, Alexandre Dumas, Victor Hugo, Liszt, Paganini, Rossini, Berlioz, Frédéric Soulié, Carle and Horace Vernet, and in a mise en abîme, Louis Huart himself... Beneath each engraving is a riddle of the character's name. Dantan exhibited these sculptures in his personal museum at his home studio on rue Blanche. Jean-Pierre Dantan was renowned for the caricature statuettes he created of his contemporaries and exhibited. The special peculiarity of these small plaster or bronze busts - measuring from 20 to 60 cm - was the riddle allowing the viewer to guess the identity of the personality depicted. It is said these famous statuettes inspired Daumier himself to create his famous caricatures.

A rare curiosity.
