Charles BAUDELAIRE Les fleurs du mal

Charles BAUDELAIRE

Les fleurs du mal

Michel Lévy frères, Paris 1869, 12,5x18,5cm, 411pp., relié.

Noted second edition, this edition is actually the third edition partly original, because here appear for the first time 25 unpublished poems, the edition now totaling 151 poems (against 100 for the edition of 1857). Portrait on steel of Baudelaire at the frontispiece by Nargeot, with his snake. Clouzot specifies: "Very rare in vintage binding without volume number on the back", which is the case with this copy. This edition, actually issued in 1868, is still dated 1869.
Vintage half green sheepskin binding. Smooth back decorated with nets. Golden title. Traces of friction, especially at the corners and edges. Small accident in the headdress, with tiny gaps. Copy very fresh, free from freckles.
Notice by Théophile Gautier.
The half-title bears the title: Complete Works. The work was sold separately alone (as Clouzot stipulates) or as the first volume of complete works whose edition spanned several years.
It should be noted that the 6 prohibited autograph dedication of the authors do not appear naturally in this edition, but in that of Brussels, in the Complement aux fleurs du mal ., Or in the Wrecks of 1866.
