Honoré de BALZAC

Le dernier chouan ou la Bretagne en 1800

Urbain Canel, Paris 1829, 10x17,5cm, 4 volumes reliés.

Very rare and highly sought-after first edition of Balzac's first novel published under by his own name. Printed ina small number of copies, this first novel, whose original title was inspired by James Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans, was reissued, revised, in 1834 under a new title: Les Chouans.
This first major work by Balzac also marks the beginning of La Comédie Humaine, in which it was later classified, in 1845, as part of the Scènes de la vie militaire.
Red half Russian leather binding, smooth spines decorated with gold and black fillets, gold friezes at head and tail, marbled paper boards, contemporary binding.
One joint restored and one flyleaf of the first volume replaced, some minor foxing.
An exceptional copy in a charming contemporary binding.
