Edition largely original, rare, adorned with a portrait of the Marquise de Sevigne in Volume I and repeated in Volume V. In the copy described by Rochebilliere, Volumes V and VI of 1737 are in a different binding, as well as most of the time, our copy presents them in the same homogeneous binding, only the parts of title and of tomaisons differ; they are red morocco for volumes V and VI and beige morocco for the first 4 volumes.
Bindings full brown sheepskin speckled contemporary. Back with richly decorated nerves, including tail animal irons (greyhounds and knights). Title and volume pieces in beige morocco for the first 4 volumes, in red morocco for the last two. A lack in the tail of volume VI. Discrete almost invisible restorations at the head of volumes I, IV and VI, as well as in tails of volumes II, III, V. Nice copy. 8 corners slightly blunted, others rubbed.
Important edition in the bibliography of the first editions of the Marquise de Sévigné; indeed, it is the first edition presenting a considerable number of letters (614 against 134 for the edition in two volumes of 1726) and the first authorized by the goddaughter of the Marquise: Pauline de Simiane; the latter will ask Perrin, a publisher in Aix en Provence, to produce an edition based on the manuscripts. Only the letters to the Comtesse de Grignan were retained. The 1754 edition, expanded, will contain 712 letters, plus letters to various correspondents. The handwritten letters were then destroyed after being selected according to interest and style. A very useful index at the end of Volume VI will find the characters scattered in the letters.
