ANONYME

(LONDRES) Explication des travaux entrepris pour la construction de la tonnelle, ou passage sous la Tamise entre Rothehithe et Wapping, à l'effet d'ouvrir une communication permanente entre les deux rives de ce fleuve

Warrington, Londres 1837, In 12 oblong (13,5x10,5cm), (4) 24pp., Plaquette brochée.

Second edition as rare as the first published in 1836 this booklet. Illustrated with a folding plate frontispiece, 8 plates, two folding. Plaque with an engraving inset. Back missing 2/3 without gravity for all. Remarkable testimony to this project tunnel under the Thames, the famous Thames Tunnel. Work began in 1824 and met many difficulties which the board reported. The tunnel was designed for horse-drawn traffic. In 1805, the Thames Archway Company was formed for the construction of a tunnel under the Thames between Rotherhithe and Limehouse, but the project was abandoned after more than 1,000 feet and was repeated in 1824, thanks to the system of TBM Marc Brunel, a reinforced shield cast in which the miners were working in separate compartments, digging the tunnel face. From time to time, the shield was put forward by large steps, while the walls of the tunnel already dug back are covered with a coating made of cast iron rings. The figure refers to this system. It is the latter which was used for the construction of the subway. The tunnel was finally completed in 1843 and served at pedestrians, and was later bought for trains. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
