Louis-Pierre ANQUETIL & Jacques Marquet de Montbreton, Baron de NORVINS

Furne et Cie, Paris 1839, 17x26,5cm, 5 volumes reliés.

The author, Edward Mennechet (1794-1845), was Louis XVIII drive and Charles X. The work appears in the years following the abdication of the latter, under the reign of Louis-Philippe I, and seeks to establish, at the heart of a contemporary of socio-political crisis, the legitimacy of the history of France through those who made it: "The glory of a country is not only in the great things it performs, it is still in the great men it produces ”.
-The first volume draws 24 portraits, from Clovis to Charles count of Anjou and of Provence, brother of Saint Louis.
-The second volume offers 24 biographies, from Joinville to Georges, cardinal of Amboise.
-The third volume, composed of 29 texts, from Anne de Beaujeu to Pierre de Ronsard.
-The fourth work, extends from Brantôme to Anne of Austria in 25 portraits (the bookbinder having inserted pages of the portrait of richelieu in the middle of that of Mathieu Molé).
-The fifth volume, dealing with 24 portraits, from Cardinal de Mazarin to Madame de Deshoulières.
- The sixth brushing 24 portraits, from Madame de Maintenon to René Dugay-Trouin.
-The seventh striving to present 24 portraits of the regent Philippe d'Orléans to the painter David.
-The eighth and last volume offering 24 portraits of Mirabeau to Prince Eugène de Beauharnais.
Reference work retracing over 1300 years a history of France through its great national figures.
