M. A. WRIGHT & Thomas ALLOM

France illustrated, exhibiting its landcape scenery, antiquities, military and ecclesiastical architecture

Fisher, son, & Co., London, Paris S.n. [1841-1846], 4 tomes en 2 Vol. in 4 (22x27,2cm), 2 Vol. reliés.

First Edition, illustrated with 148 engravings on steel, 96 on the first three volumes, by Thomas Allom; the fourth volume includes 52 boards including 36 by Eugène Lami and 16 by Allom. Full blue glossy Calf night. Back with false nerves decorated boards of various wheels and nets with some maroquinés boxes. boards decorated with a rich frieze Romantic and irons cold corner. Part of title in red morocco. Marbled edges. Scratches on boards. Caps and joints slightly rubbed. Superb English binding. The fourth volume, which often lack, is the translation of Summer in Paris, Jules Janin. It includes, for illustration, a Balzac Paris. Note that the first volume contains many scenes of the Pyrenees, very fashionable then. Another volume contains many scenes of the Loire (Saumur, Angers, Amboise ...). The book seeks to bring together all that is remarkable in France, both from an architectural point of view landscape, illustration accompanying the historical and descriptive text. The illustrative wealth is remarkable, and we admire as the Château de Pau as the Pantheon, the Circus Gavarni the cathedral of Orleans. The interesting is that following the trends of the time, found in engravings of characters in contemporary costumes, and often the place as it was then. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
