first edition.
Contemporary binding in full mottled calf, back with five nerves decorated with boxes and gilded florets and a room under red morocco, gilt roll on turns and headdresses, all red edges. Lower corner of the slightly broken top cover and two pages glued padding without missing the beginning of the volume, otherwise fine copy.
In this book, the terms are listed in alphabetical order. The author nevertheless points out in his preface that his book is not to look like a dictionary but as a useful naval encyclopedia not only to "sea man", but also to maritime traders and policy.
Jacques-Pierre Bourdé of Villehuet (1732-1789) came from a family of sailors and was at the service of the East India Company. He is the author of many other books on navigation.
Nice copy pleasantly established contemporary binding.
