François BEDOS DE CELLES

La gnomonique pratique, ou l'art de tracer les cadrans solaires avec la plus grande précision, par les meilleurs méthodes, mises à la portée de tout le monde. Avec Des Observations sur la manière de régler les Horloges

Alexandre Jombert, à Paris 1780, In 8 (12,5x19,7cm), xl, 510pp. 39 Pl., relié.

New edition, the original seems to have appeared in 1755; it is illustrated with a frontispiece by Gazot, engraved by Maniere, and 38 folding planks at the end of the volume engraved by Meunier, as well as a large folding map of France drawn by Bonne. These boards include different types of dial, and how to build them. The board name was expanded in this edition, there were 34 in the 1760 edition.
Binding full sheepskin marbled time. Back with ornate nerves. title label in red morocco. A crack in the head. Missing the upper bit in the lead. Lower joint split at the top. Headdress very rubbed and fragile. 3 blunt corners. Traces of friction. Works of verse on the frontispiece and the title page, on 2cm.
Undoubtedly one of the best general treatises of gnomonic, perfectly illustrated, made under the patronage of the Academy of Sciences by the scholar and learned Benedictine François de Bespine de Celles (1709 - 1779). The definite advantage of this treatise lies entirely in the clarity of its practice and its exposure, which allow an easy and meticulous application.
