Abel-François VILLEMAIN

Élémens de la grammaire chinoise, ou principes généraux du Kou-Wen ou style antique, et du Kouan-Hoa, c'est-à-dire, de la langue commune généralement usitée dans l'empire chinois.

Imprimerie Royale, Paris 1822, In-4 (20,5x27cm), xxxij, 214pp. (1) 13pp., relié.

First edition, very rare; illustrated two folding lithographic plates and 24 pages of ideograms. The book also contains numerous ideograms (woodcuts) in-text. Ultimately was linked article from the Journal of the scholars of Sacy the orientalist famous book published. Printing on thick paper.
Full brown calf frozen food. Spine ribbed features 5 irons, rollers and tail head and nerves. Large central medallion embossed on cold dishes, cold frames and hot succeeding. Interior frieze. Restorations very skilled back. Part of title in red morocco. Beautiful romantic binding in the style of Thouvenin, Vogel ... Very nice copy.
Abel Rémusat realized in this work the first Chinese grammar was finally usable. He distinguishes carefully the vernacular (Mandarin) and Chinese literature. Philological work outstanding, and conversely previous studies Rémusat not imposed any Western model to the Chinese language. The interesting preface establishes a bibliography of studies of the Chinese language. In 1814 a chair of Chinese were created at the College de France for Rémusat.
Copy desirable remarkably established in a strictly binding master of the time.
