Rare meeting of the three parts of the Minister of State having appeared separately. The first part appeared for the first time in Paris, at Toussaint du Bray, in 1631, the second and third appeared respectively in 1643 and 1651 with the same publisher and were later picked up by the Elzeviers. Mark with the sphere on the title pages of the three volumes.
Binding in full dark blue morocco with long grains around 1830. Smooth back with cold fillets, irons and cold casters. Cold-struck boards with 2 frame casters. Golden slices. A thin stripe on the lower dish.
Jean Silhon (1596-1667) was first secretary of Richelieu before passing Councilor of State. Entirely devoted to Richelieu, The Minister of State is a political reflection that paints a flattering portrait of the regime put in place by Richelieu. The three volumes contain numerous historical studies and an overall reflection on power, alliances and diplomacy.
Bayle "without question one of the most solid and most judicious authors of his century".
Ex libris 'liber libro' lion holding a shield for the first two volumes. Third volume: ex libris with the arms of Georges Montandon.
