First edition

S.n. [Marc Michel Rey], à Londres [Amsterdam] 1774, 2 tomes en 2 Vol. in 8 (12,5x19,5cm), (14) 397pp. et (4) 500pp. (3) ; 84pp. (3), relié.

Rare and interesting meeting of these two works. New edition of the system of nature after the rare original 1770 and first edition of Helvetius on the same date of 1774 that this new edition of Mirabaud; actually three editions were published on the same date, with a different collation, without having been able to determine if there is a true original. Full sheepskin marbled time. Smooth back ornate. Part of title in red morocco, and volume number in black morocco. Red edges. Caps tail pulled. A brown spot on the top plate of Volume I. Restoring using a piece of leather on the upper flat of Volume II. Pretty good copy. Helvetius's book is an exegesis and a review of the system of nature, the author seems to have condensed the material in the form of maxims and assertions, all resting on a strong materialistic creed. We now know that the book is perhaps not Helvetius, although it recognizes its philosophy. As for the system of nature Mirabaud, he was received like a bomb in the middle letters, and finally poorly received by philosophers. It was not overtly materialist theses d'Holbach who were convicted but the demonstration of atheism and anti-clericalism. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
