Second edition, published the same year as the original, and like this one at the address of Amsterdam alone.
Binding in full veal blond marbled. Smooth back decorated. Title piece in red morocco. Worn head cap. Split upper bit at the top. A blunt corner. Friction.
It is undoubtedly the best work of Mably (1709-1785), historian, moral and political philosopher, who was later considered one of the first communist theorists. Presenting itself as a translation of Greek and talks between Phocion, leader of Athens and Aristias, a young citizen. Mably develops the relationship between morality and politics at length and leads to the idea that private property is at the root of social injustice. He nonetheless recognizes the irreversible nature of the money, while deploring the concentration of money. Mably was, however, suspicious of any political system; his true belief was that of the man of nature as Rousseau explained it. His works reveal the proximity of his political thought to those of Condillac, Plato and Locke.
