Jean-Baptiste DELISLE DE SALES

New and improved and enlarged edition (partly original), illustrated with a frontispiece, 12 figures unsigned and six vignettes title (title pages are fully engraved). Nice print. The original 1770 edition was only 3 in 12 Volumes Full Calf tortoiseshell contemporary. Smooth back adorned with jewels and multiple wheels. Triple Net framework on boards. Slices cailloutées blue. Light scuffs on the boards. Some wormholes to bites and worm work in the margins of Volume I of the first 20 sheets. Despite these minor defects, fine copy, with excellent and fresh. Protean book devoted to the study of man, deftly mixing and an always pleasant reading stories, dialogues and plays (there is even quoted in full letters from 'Persian Letter'), the history; the book has an encyclopedic ulterior purpose on the nature of man. If the first volume is devoted strictly speaking the philosophy of nature in history, the following volumes away quickly in order to devote himself entirely to the study of man (morality, religion, politics). Volume IV of particular interest is given, its purpose being the study of monsters of nature (man of the woods, fish man, eunuchs ...) bibliographical sources are valuable. These are the last two volumes studying the relationship of man to the religion which immediately sent the book condemned to fire and banish her in perpetuity with confiscation of property. The latter not only the Christian religion alone, but most then known cults of those Veterans and current ones. At the end of the work, a very severe political reflection on religion. It was called the author of "monkey Diderot." In that it uses the same forms to achieve his goal, no doubt, but this is a lot common among philosophers of the eighteenth. The work is highly original, multiple, and if it is open to criticism, it is in its own qualities. 'From the philosophy of nature is to rediscover and rehabilitate. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
