Very rare meeting of the three albums Shonga (Image spring), from the series Tokaido (Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road) which, respectively subtitles Sky, man and earth. The author of the text seems to be Tamenaga Shunsui, who wrote many stories of sexual topography.
Engraved by Horitake. 26 prints with erotic and pornographic, the vast majority of double page.

Tokaido Road, the principal axis linking Japan (Kyoto, the imperial capital) in Edo (the capital of the Shogun), had become, in the middle of the nineteenth century, one of the most popular Japanese artistic themes. The first was to have illustrated Hiroshige, in a series of landscapes (he gave 20 series). This road eventually inspired many painters, including Utagawa which was undoubtedly the most famous and most popular in Japan. He then gave, under the mantle, an anonymous and all Shunga erotic version of the theme.
The art of erotic print was practiced by many artists, including Hokusai; it was a relatively easy way to monetize his art. Its figuration, like anything in Japan is codified: coupling servants and lords, monstrous size of the sexes, voyeurism and sadism. This speaks very well of Japanese eroticism that has more to staging than the theatrical representation of sexuality itself.
