Jean-Jacques ROUSSEAU Emile, ou de l'éducation

Jean-Jacques ROUSSEAU

Emile, ou de l'éducation

Jean Néaulme [Duchesne], La Haye [Paris] 1762, 4 tomes en 4 vol. in-8 (12.5x20cm), (2) vii (2) 466pp. (5) et (2) 407pp. et (2) 384pp. et (2) 455pp., relié.

Edition includes all the features described well by Mac Eachern: printing errors pagination (vol. 1: S8 instead of 88, 433 instead of 443, 46 instead of 465, vol 2. 256 instead of 356 and 257 instead of 357, vol 3: 363 instead of 383, vol 4:.. leg 3 of the first 336 missing), cartons marked with asterisks (vol. 1 Av and B4, vol 2.: H3 and N6 (poorly encrypted. I6)). The last page ends with the word "end" and has no grapes. It is illustrated five figures drawn by Charles Eisen, and engraved by Longueuil (2), Louis the Great (2) and Pasquier (1). Full calf blond speckled time. Smooth back casing adorned with jewels and gold. Parts of title and volume numbers in bright red and brown morocco. Red edges. Head cover of the first volume slightly hilly and some traces of rubbing the cuts and caps. Fine copy large margins (4cm) very fresh, very much appreciated. A small loss with minor tear in margin of the board of "Thetis". This in-8 Emile edition is the rarest and most sought after. It was preferred by the author format itself, the latter being invested heavily in the publication of this book. According Mac Eachern the question format provoked lively debate between Rousseau and his publisher Duchesne, the latter wishing to offer for sale in an edition and a 12-in-8 with smaller circulation as more expensive. Rousseau, despite his reluctance, thinking that in-8 would benefit sought, accepted against the heart in terms of Duchesne. Misunderstandings between Rousseau and his publisher put more than once in danger printing Emile. Important work of Rousseau's thought, where it addresses the essential antagonism of nature and culture in terms of pedagogy. Emile to engage in the social contract, it must undergo a great education, the latter is discussed point by point in the book. The last chapter is devoted to the education of a young girl to be the wife of Emile.
