Samuel RICHARSON

Pamela, ou la vertu recompensée

Aux dépens de la Compagnie, à Amsterdam 1744, 4 tomes en 4 Vol. in 12 (9,5x16,2cm), (26) 480pp. et (2) 491pp. et (6) 635pp. et (2) 646pp., relié.

New edition, illustrated with 32 figures by Punt and title vignette repeated on 4 volumes. Title pages in red and black. First edition, it seems, has to be fully illustrated, previous editions showed only four headpieces, however it should be noted that the figures are dated 1742 The mention of third edition refers only Dutch editions is therefore not significant. Translation of the Abbe Prevost and Aubert de la Chesnaye Hood.
Full Sheepskin brown vintage. Back tooled raised. Part of title and volume number in red morocco. Head cover of Volume I pulled out. Lack head of Volume II. Lack the upper jaw tail of Volume I. Headgear tail missing part to Volume III. Corners bumped. Friction. Pearses foxing.
Pamela was a real twist in the world of literature and was a resounding success all over Europe. Its main merit is likely to have given birth not only epistolary novel (Rousseau) but Fielding gave two satirical suites: The Adventures of Joseph Andrews and Tom Jones. We know that Diderot raved about this novel. Pamela is a novel of manners and romance novel whose imprint on the literature of the eighteenth is permanent and indelible. It is often regarded as the first novel of manners bourgeois and this move places the action of the aristocracy to the bourgeoisie had an enormous impact. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
