First edition in-8, illustrated with 21 figures of Chodowiecki and a frontispiece portrait by Pujos on hard paper. Draw the figures before the letter. The original English was published in 1748.
Bindings full porphyry antique sheepskin. Smooth back richly adorned with decorative boxes, Greek wheels in tail and head, casters in the caissons. title label in red morocco, piece of tomaison with urn and garland in black morocco. Leather of the upper joint of Volume I closely split at the top; slight lack in tail. Small leather manue at the head of Volume II, revealing the cardboard; gaps in tail bit; lack of the lower bit in the lead. Volume III: lower bit split in tail. Toms IV: lower bit split in tail. Volume V: Upper joint tightly split. Volume VI: Lower and upper joint with missing tail and slots slits along the lower joint. Volume VII: Top of headdress rubbed. Volume IX: Upper joint split at the top and top of the headdress rubbed. Volume X: Lower joint in open head, idem in tail, upper joint split in the lead. Some corners a little dull. Despite the mentioned flaws, superb set in a rich decorative binding.
Clarisse harlowe is the second great novel published by the author after the immense success of Pamela; it is again a romance that the virtuous heroine is forced by her family to marry a noble, ugly and obese man, against his will. It will flee with the denominated Lovelace, the type of the libertine elegant, scoundrel and deceitful, who wishes to constrain body and soul, leading to a social and moral decay, but it will be without counting the virtuous qualities of Clarisse. If the novel, from the modern point of view, is skewed by sentimentality and length, the fact remains that the construction of the plot, the dramatic twists and psychology will lastingly mark the European literature. Diderot will proclaim it in his Eloge de Richardson , and many authors will claim or be influenced by it: Rousseau, Jane Austen, Choderlos de Laclos ...
