Honoré Gabriel Riquetti Comte de MIRABEAU & TIBULLE & Jean SECOND

Elégies de Tibulle. Suivies des Baisers de Jean Second et de Contes et nouvelles par Mirabeau

S.n., Paris An IV - 1798, In-8 (12,5x20cm), (4) XIX ; 375 pp. et (4) ; 393pp. (2) et (4) 388 pp., 3 volumes reliés.

Second edition of this edition adorned with two portraits (Mirabeau in the first volume and Sophie in the second volume) and 12 full-page figures engraved by Dupréel and Eluin after Borel. The first edition appeared in Year III.
Bindings in full marble calf of time. Smooth back with 2 lyre bars and 2 grotesque caissons. Casters of Greek. Title and tomato pieces in red morocco. Double frieze framing on the boards. Slices golden. Backs evenly thinned. Traces of friction notably at the joints. Small scattered foxing. Good copy overall.
This translation of the Elegies of Tibulle and the famous Kisses of Jean Second (poetic variations on the nature of kisses) was executed during the stay of Mirabeau in the prison of Vincenne, it is dedicated to Sophie Ruffey. The third volume is occupied by the tales and short stories of the same Tibulle. All the works translated in this collection are deliciously libertine and gallant, homage of Mirabeau to the love of her beautiful, they are embellished with notes and comments.
