Claude GODARD D'AUCOURT Mémoires turcs

Claude GODARD D'AUCOURT

Mémoires turcs

Par la Société, Amsterdam 1776, In-12 (10x17,2cm), xxiv (2) 176pp. ; 238pp., relié.

New edition, after the first published in 1743.
Binding full porphyry vintage calf. Smooth back decorated. title label in tawny morocco. 2 corners blunt and bare. Nice copy.
In full fashion "turqueries", and after Marana, Montesquieu, Godard d'Aucourt in turn gives his contribution to this curious literary and artistic genre by the story of a Turk landing in Paris with his beloved slave and confronted to gallant Parisian mores. The first part of the novel is told in the first person, and therefore from the restrictive point of view of a Turkish prince, it is not without humor and libertine situations, the first hundred pages telling the passionate love of the narrator in Turkey under the form of the oriental tale. The second part is an exchange of letters between the narrator and one of his slaves, the latter tells the story of his love.
