First edition small size due to the original published in Berlin and Paris on the same date. Full marbled calf contemporary. Smooth back decorated urn irons and rollers. Part of title and volume number in black morocco. Roll on turns. Lack head of Volume I; a snag with missing tail. Friction. 3 corners bumped. The novel is an exchange of letters on the atrocities in France during the revolutionary contemporary, of a noble family who fled France in 1792 for persecution. While this novel remains a novel of education, pedagogical and moral vocation, Madame de Genlis warns in the preface that it is not for children.
