Henri Joseph DU LAURENS ABBÉ ( DULAURENS) L’arretin

Henri Joseph DU LAURENS ABBÉ ( DULAURENS)

L’arretin

Aux dépens de la Congrégation de l'Index, à Rome [Paris] 1768, in 12 (10x15,5cm), de (4) xxiv, 26-168pp. , 156pp,, deux parties en un volume relié.

The first edition was published in 1763 at the same address under the title: The arretin, or debauchery of the mind makes sense. Full morocco lemon time. Smooth back decorated. Part of title in green morocco. Triple fillet border on covers. Gilt edges. Nice copy. Upper joint slightly rubbed. The arretin consists of 25 essays and stories as diverse as The Negro subjects, agriculture, chastity or celibacy, History Master Pierre, ect. These are all strong criticism, sometimes direct, sometimes satirical or allegorical, the teaching of the Bible, the church and its history. Father Du Laurens (1719-1793) is an anti-religious polemicist and writer whose works are all licentious libertines, but most profoundly anti-religious. The author does not hesitate to descend into the lower trivialities to support his criticism, but his comic inventions, often amazing, have earned him praise. Prosecuted for his books, he fled to Holland paper, and was imprisoned in Mainz in 1767, ending his days in 74 years in a convent. 'This book is a lively and sprightly enough criticism of the main stories of the Bible ... The wife of Suze is a critique of The New Heloise. The wise Pangloss is Solomon, the wisest of men, it is a original chapter, even by his singular biblical quotations. The story is that of Suzanne Suzon and two old history Dildo ... The origin of these instruments chamois or velvet become so common in religious houses. Finally, the convents of the Jesuits are an allegory of the story of Sodom. In a word, the entire volume is rather facetious criticism of the Bible and clerical institutions simply a book guy. Gay / Lemonnyer I, 263-264. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!
