First edition

Denis DIDEROT La religieuse

Denis DIDEROT

La religieuse

Chez Buisson, à Paris 1796, In 8, (4) 411pp., relié.

First edition, rare, like all those of the author. Two editions were published on the same date by the same publisher, the second was actually printed in England as the true original was made from the manuscript owned by the Brothers Grimm. Tchemerzine II, 965. Binding weapons hit on flat Baron Le Caron de Fleury, whose rich library was sold 30 mai1908. Full red morocco of the late nineteenth signed Thierry. Back tooled raised. Triple fillet border on covers; rich inner lace endowed with multiple wheels. Tiny friction. Very nice copy in a desirable requirement. The origin of this famous novel is a rather cruel joke made by the salon of Madame d'Epinay and newly acueillir the Marquis de Croismare therein; The latter ran a trial on a girl who had been placed in a convent against her will. Diderot was instructed to write the letters of the girl to the Marquis, and make him believe his escape. These letters constituted Religious. The novel remains unfinished and Diderot has no desire, prudently to publish it. In 1780, he changed his manuscript, corrects, and as many manuscripts of the author, it circulates in the mantle from his peers and relationships. The work will be published after his death in 1796; the smell of sulfur and anticlericalism who lived asset becoming an editorial in this revolutionary period.
