Giulio Cesare Croce (1550-1609), born in the province of Bologna, comes from a poor family, he studied medicine, then embarked on a career in literature, then died poor. Bertoldino and Cacasenno are two emblematic and extremely popular characters from Italy, they have become types, Bertoldino is a cunning and rascal character, who opposes the simplicity and the rusticity of Cacasenno. The two accomplices have thus (like Don Quixote) become more famous than the book from which they come. An opera was made of it at the end of the 18th century with a libretto by Goldoni.
