First edition

Constantin-François de Chasseboeuf, Comte de VOLNEY Les ruines, ou méditation sur les révolutions des empires

Constantin-François de Chasseboeuf, Comte de VOLNEY

Les ruines, ou méditation sur les révolutions des empires

Chez Desenne, Volland, Plassans, à Paris 1792, in 8 (12,5x20cm), xvi, 295pp., relié.

First French edition. The first edition was published in Geneva in 1791 llustrée 3 plates, a frontispiece and two folding. Hemispherical card and birth. Full sheepskin marbled time. Smooth back decorated. Part of title in red morocco. Upper cap threadbare. Friction to the joints and borders. Famous work of philosopher Volney in which alternate personal memories, thoughts and philosophy. If the subject is a general inquiry into the disappearance and the ruin of empires (Volney begins his book with a meditation on the collapse of Palmyra), the book touches on many topics that are related: the origins of religious cults, symbolism, worship of the stars. The book excels in his lyrical style and allegories. Volney, remembering Herodotus trusts as a historian to the facts, and he questions the ruins so they show him the ruin of an empire and a city. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
