Pierre-François TISSOT

Trophées des armées françaises depuis 1792 jusqu'en 1815

Le Fuel, Paris 1819 - 1820, In-8 (13x20,7cm), (6) xcviii (2) 320pp. et (6) 484pp. et (6) 412pp. et (6) 424pp. et (4) 357pp. (1) et (6) 471pp., 6 volumes reliés.

First edition handsomely illustrated with 6 frontispiece titles and 60 figures, all on strong vellum, under silky paper ; engraved after François Louis Couché by Bovinet.
Contemporary bound in half blond basane, richly decorated spine. Red morocco title-pieces, black basane volume-pieces, framed with foliage ornaments. Small tear at the upper part of the joint in volume I. Very small loss at the head of volume III. Some foxing and spotting, in the margins and around the engravings (due to the silky paper left over them). A very nice copy with a particularly elegant and decorative binding.
Ex libris on the back cover : "Vloemans". Second ex libris from the XXth century : "B. G." featuring an open book.

Military history of France from 1792 to 1815 recording every battle (Revolution, Egyptian campaigns, Vendée wars, Europe...). The work narrates the revolutionary and imperial history considering the latter to be a direct continuation of the first, viewing Napoleon Bonaparte as the central figure of France's history during both of these periods. For the sake of historical objectivity, the work borrows extracts from several memoirs of generals and prominent figures from the Napoleonic wars, notably Lannes... The third volume dealing with the Egyptian campaign also contains various reports from scholars who accompanied Bonaparte.
