Jean SLEIDAN

Commentariorum de statu religionis & Reipublicae, Carolo Quinto Caesar, Libri XXVI

Chez Theodore Rihellius (Rihel), Argentorati (Strasbourg) s.d. [1559], grand in-8 (12x19,5cm), (16) 872pp. (20) [Sig : a8 A-Z8 Aa-Zz8 Aaa-Iii8 Kkk6], relié.

A folio edition was published simultaneously in Strasbourg at Jean Rihel, reprinted with that of 1558. The 1558 edition is the oldest we found, but according to some sources the original edition dates from 1555. Brand of printer on the title page.
Binding in full pigskin over wooden boards of the time. Dos three nerves. Stamped dishes of several floral friezes and frames, as well as a portrait medallions garland of Emperor Charles V. Remains of clasps. Discrete restorations to the jaws, a hitch restored at a nerve, second course with a few spots. Lacking a cover page before the title.
The rigors against Protestants developed by Francis I, the historian and philologist Jean Sleidan was forced to move to Strasbourg, this is where he wrote his commentary on the state of religion and the republic under the reign of Charles Quint. The book, by his study of political Below, is a rigorous history of the Reformation from 1517 to 1556 base for any modern historiography history of Protestantism, not only German but European. The work was in fact later published under the title "History of the Reformation.
Many handwriting of the time, later on the first inside cover and title page and a Strasbourg seminar library buffer.
