Maurice Comte de SAXE Les rêveries ou Mémoires sur l'art de la guerre

Maurice Comte de SAXE

Les rêveries ou Mémoires sur l'art de la guerre

Chez Pierre Gosse, à La Haye 1758, In Folio (24x35cm), VIII (4) 228pp.(4) 40pl. 15pp., relié.

Second edition, reprint of the first edition in-folio in 1756 at the same publisher, rare, illustrated with 40 plates including 4 unfolding and 16 double page. Large vignette with weapons in title page, and 41 ornaments (header, culs-de-lampe). Title page in red and black.
Binding in full icy blond calf. Jansenist smooth back. Title piece in red morocco. Missing in the lead and little lack in line. A slot in the lower bit at the tail. Rubbed corners. Nice copy.
Unique book in the field, the work shines with the spirit of the author who animates it. The Count of Saxony reviews all the factors, all the elements necessary for the successful conduct of battles, from uniforms to boards, to strategy, in a simple, clear and intelligible style. Follows the chapter on the propagation of the human species, intended to counterbalance the art of destroying populations; the author delivers his thoughts on the proliferation of demography and ways to increase it. The term "reveries" refers not to the modern sense of ramblings but to that of realized hopes and secret thoughts.
