Edition published anonymously. The Dialogue of Sylla was added for the first time in 1748.
Bound in full marbled sheepskin of the time. Back with five nerves decorated with boxes and gilded florets, and a part of title red morocco. To a hole in the head box. 3 bumped corners and bare. Friction, and some slashes on the boards. Good copy.
The book, whose first edition dates back to 1734, is a panorama of the history of Rome in which the author stresses the importance of the influence of the collective history of the past history of peoples and vice versa. Apart from these considerations, Montesquieu is to underline the specifics of the Roman people (love of country, work and freedom in particular) that allowed it to thrive and to extend its influence throughout the Mediterranean basin, but also know a great era of decadence own to this.
