Jacques MARSOLIER

Guillaume Louis Colomyez, Toulouse 1693, In 8 (10x17,8cm), (18) 449pp., relié.

Rare first edition published just days before the History of Ximenez Flechier whose comparison provoked a controversy until the nineteenth century. While the book Fléchier tends to illustrate the holiness of Cardinal, one of Marsolier more critical, addresses "libertines, that party philosophers began to look up." Full contemporary calf. Back with five nerves ornate coffered and gilded finials. Part of title in red morocco. Small tear without loss of the lower cap, scuffs on covers, top corners and recessed bottom corners bumped. About this book, D'Alembert officially proclaim the superiority of the book Marsolier, while specifying that Fléchier "would have removed its competitor, if instead of considering Ximenes as a saint and politics, he had made a hypocrite sublime by skillfully used his views and beliefs of peoples handling with address, to cement his power, weapons that religion made him so powerful in the hands of the minister. "(quoted by Stephen D'Alembert Delacroix in his History of Fléchier) . Bookplate manuscript of the time the back of the page. Rare copy of the first edition of this text will know a great success and many reprints. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
