First edition illustrated with 22 title vignettes and 10 portraits engraved by Fillieul and Scottin, and published by his widow Emilie Lenfant. The Dissertation of M. de Beausobre on the Adamites of Bohemia follows the work of Lenfant (258-370p.). 2 title thumbnails. Biography of the author in the introductory pages. Ornaments, headbands and culs-de-lampe. This edition should not be confused with its counterfeit published in Utrecht and which does not contain the title vignettes. Title pages in red and black.

The Hussite War is a historic event of prime importance in the history of the Church, Czechoslovakia and Bohemia. In choosing to establish the history, the Protestant writer Lenfant there locates a foretaste of the Protestant Reformation operated by Luther and sees in Jan Huss a precursor.
Jan Huss is a fourteenth-century Czech priest who advocates church reform, calls for a return to evangelical poverty and fights against indulgences. He preaches in his native language and translates the Gospels into Czech, thus fixing the Czech written language, and claims freedom for his people, against the emperor and king of Bohemia. The Council of Constance condemned him for heresy and the stake in 1415. His death led to 18 years of war in Bohemia. The Hussites will resist 5 Catholic crusades requested by the pope and will dominate Bohemia by their military victories. The church will bow to certain demands of the Hussites at the Council of Basle, granting Czech reading of the Epistle and the Gospels, and Communion in Czech. In 1575, two-thirds of Czechs will join the Lutheran reform.
