The first flagellants appeared in the 11th century and the movement would redouble in strength during the black plagues in Europe, it thus reached its peak during the 14th century. This movement was quickly condemned by the church as a heretic and a millenarian. The movement quickly became anarchic and a threat to order, both of the church and of society. The pope delivered them to the inquisition in 1349, and the king of France Philippe V prohibited flagellants on pain of death.
