First Edition in French translation by Pierre Henri Larcher.
Full mottled calf contemporary. Back tooled raised. Part of title in red morocco. A tear with slight loss in the third box. Good copy.
Martinus Scriblerus was originally a literary club whose members (Pope, Swift, John Gay, Arbuthnot ...) met autourt satire of knowledge and scholarship. Scriblerus means scribbler. The texts were written collectively by different hands, but always under the fictitious name of Martinus Scriblerus. The club was founded in 1712 and closed in 1745. The book therefore sets the biography of the famous scientist Martinus Scriblerus with all the satirical verve and humor typical of English literature of the eighteenth century.
