Letter epistolary in Canada. "The romantic rites of Canada and the customs of its inhabitants are described in this novel with great truth", Revue des Romans (1839). Frances Brooke (1724-1789), an English writer, lived in Canada where she married an Anglican minister. A lieutenant leaves for French Canada to set up an establishment, and lives in Quebec City, Montreal (of which he makes ample descriptions). The lieutenant makes certain trips to Canada, to New York, and gives us his political reflections, on the necessity of uniting the French and the English, on the customs of the Hurons, & c. Very interesting novel about Canada around 1765 and the different colonies (definitive cession of French Canada to England in 1763).
