New edition in four languages ​​after the one quoted on p. 59 at Mortier in 1659. This is the third edition, the original having been published in Paris in 1694, in 8, in French only. The remarkable illustration includes an allegorical frontispiece by Jan van Vianen, a large leaflet of the city and the Palace of Versailles, and 218 numbered plates, including five unfolding, all engraved by P. le Gros, Garnier, I. Clerion , N. Coustous, Cornu, after the drawings of Thomassin.
The book is divided into four parts with 3 pages of titles in red and black for the ensemble (one in Dutch, one in French, and one at the date of 1695 at Pierre Mortier), and 4 pages of titles in red and black. black for each of the volumes, of which here is the detail: t. 1. The ancient and modern statues of Versailles, fig. 1-53 - t. 2. The groups of Versailles, fig. 54-85 - t. 3. The fountains and other ornaments of Versailles, fig 86-172 - t. 4. The baths and vases of Versailles, fig. 173-218.
Binding full brown sheepskin contemporary. Back to nerves adorned. Modern title coin handwritten with black pen. Eliminated headdress. Blunt corners including a heavily stripped. Friction. The large leaflet has a restoration on the back, invisible on the front. An old manuscript sheet in fine with the names of the sculptors.
It is considered that the work in question is the finest achievement of Simon Thomassin (1653-1732), engraver of the king, who has produced many books. The work was commissioned by Louis XIV himself in 1689.
