Second edition of this work, first published by the Imprimerie Royale in 1670, and illustrated with a title vignette with the arms of Louis XIV, two banners drawn by Bailly and engraved by Le Pautre, two initials signed by Le Clerc, and two engraved titles, 12 double-page plates engraved by Le Clerc after Le Brun (of which four of tapestries showing scenes from the life of Louis XIV) and 32 emblems on 16 leaves.
Contemporary red morocco with the arms of Louis XIV, spine richly decorated in eight compartments, gilt roulettes to raised bands, gilt compartments with gilt fleurs de lys, containing in their centre the initials of Louis XIV (two interlaced 'L's with a crown above), gilt title to second compartment, double series of triple gilt fillet frames to covers, gilt fleurs de lys to corners of central frame with arms of Louis XIV, gilt roulettes to headpieces and edges of covers, gilt roulette frame to pastedowns, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, all edges gilt. A few very skillful repairs to joints and spine.
The explanations of the emblems between text pages are absent, meaning that the pagination for the text portion is not continuous.
Collector's label stuck to first blank endpaper indicating that "The text, printed on paper of a smaller format than the plates, was mounted into a larger format for re-binding. This is so with all copies re-bound at the time, like this one, in red morocco with the arms of King Louis XIV." A few manuscript annotations (numbering) to back of plates.
Ex-libris of Thomas Osborne, first Duke of Leeds with his motto Pax in bello.
A superb copy, richly illustrated with finely printed engravings in red morocco with the arms of Louis XIV.
